Part of everyone’s life on the planet is, ironically, something that is not discussed a lot. Therefore, being appointed to design an extension to W. J. O’Brien’s funeral home gave a fascinating insight into the various requirements of what is a highly specialised occupation.
In order to be able to accommodate additional needs of mourners at both wakes and funerals, an extension was required that could house bereaved families and friends in a separate area of the building.
With a constrictive site, the challenge was to add a light filled space, which would still remain personal and subdued – allowing bereaved members of families to both come together and mourn.
The result has been a design which continues to allow private services to be held in the beautifully restored funeral home / resting room for the deceased (previously a school house), whilst the new addition provides a more open / light filled space for either spill-over funeral service space, or a private wake room.
The additional space provided has been welcomed as a success by our client, who’s extremely efficient and professional family run business will be able to continue to offer their constant high levels of service.
